ARTIST BIO
Aimee Shardlow produces paintings that evoke place through representation and gestural mark-making, to transcend the act of replication. Blurring the boundary between land and sea, Aimee captures the liminality of the Cornish coastal landscape.

At the centre of her practice is a fascination with time elapsing. The landscape, as an ever-changing vessel, embodies this impermanence: it is never the same twice. Through her coastal walks, Aimee observes the shifting seasons and weather, documenting raw and emotive impressions of the landscape.

The process of painting allows Aimee to elongate an instantaneous moment, using dynamic mark-making to manipulate time within the image. Her paintings remain rooted in the structural integrity of the coastal landforms, using these as a vessel for abstraction. Maintaining authenticity to geographical structures, she playfully juxtaposes the permanence of structure with the changeability of the weather and seasons. With reference to Ivon Hitchens’ ‘Terwick Mill’ series, each of Aimee’s paintings establish a dependency between abstraction and realisation, relating this directly to nature’s transience. Aimee’s obsession with mark-making results in abstract layers of paint that, on close observation, appear as a hurried assemblage of shape and colour, that come together to produce a pictorial landscape painting.

Aimee Shardlow was born in Croydon, South East London in 2002, later moving to Falmouth, Cornwall in 2021. She completed her BA Honours degree at Falmouth University in 2024 and has since established her own business and website to support the growth of her artistic practice.
